The Role of Persecution and Suffering

At this time, and compared to other parts of the world, working in Europe would generally be considered a lower-risk environment. However, that does not mean that there are no risks.

It also does not mean that we are called to a life without persecution and suffering. The battle that we fight is a spiritual battle, but it can have physical consequences when evil spiritual forces work against those who carry the banner and the message of Jesus.

Each missional worker should evaluate his or her own risks and understand that persecution and suffering are both likely, and probably even necessary. The Bible tells us that, as Christians, we should expect risk. We should expect danger.

Let’s start our conversation by watching this video on the risk and reward in God’s mission. Let’s try to take God’s perspective through his word:

Here are the scriptures from John’s teaching:

  • What stood out to you the most in John Piper’s teaching?
  • Which scripture spoke to you the most deeply and poignantly?
  • How do you feel about the realities of persecution and suffering for Christians?
  • How does God use persecution and suffering? Why?
  • How do you believe that God will use persecution for those that you will disciple?
  • What issues do you need to address in your heart on this topic? Tell them to another person and pray for one another.
